Equipping Homeschoolers for High School Success

The Course Challenge Option at Roots

As Christian homeschooling parents, we bear a responsibility to educate our children in alignment with biblical values while preparing them for the challenges of life beyond high school and our homes. For those of us navigating high school with our teens, the path to post-secondary can feel daunting. Roots has worked collaboratively with The Father’s House Christian School to offer a solution through its Course Challenge program, enabling students to earn Alberta Education 30-level credits while still pursuing a traditional home education.

Understanding the Course Challenge Program

The Course Challenge initiative allows Roots students in Grades 10-12 to demonstrate mastery of Alberta’s Program of Studies outcomes for courses such as Math 30-1, Biology 30, English 30-1, and others, including Art 30 and Choral Music 30.  Eligible students—those in good academic standing, supported by parental oversight, and deemed ready by a family facilitator—engage in a formal assessment process supervised by a certificated Course Challenge Specialist (CCS). Specialists provide a list of suggested resources, work collaboratively with families to establish deadlines, and complete assessments for marks.

A Pathway to Credits and Post-Secondary

Successful completion of a Course Challenge can yield up to five high school credits per course, with prerequisite credits also attainable. For diploma courses, the school-awarded mark (70%) is determined by the coursework, while the diploma exam (30%) completes the requirement. Non-diploma courses like Art 31 or General Music 30 require no exam. Parents initiate this process by submitting an Intent to Course Challenge and Parental Permission form to the Principal At Large by August 25 (year-round/semester one) or December 10 (semester two), accompanied by a $450 fee per course, reimbursable through funding. Preparation for diploma exams is mandatory, ensuring students are equipped for success.

Next Steps for Families

This program is a testament to Roots’ commitment to empowering parents as primary educators while providing opportunities to attain high school 30-level credits. It is demanding but can result in admission requirements that may open doors to post-secondary institutions. Explore the Course Challenge Handbook for further information.
